Word search puzzles are a brilliant way for children to practise spelling and letter recognition while feeling like they're just playing a game. It's easy to control — either drag your finger or mouse across a word from its first letter to its last, or simply tap the first letter and then the last letter and we'll do the rest. Both work equally well on a tablet, touchscreen or with a mouse, so children can pick whichever feels easiest.
Searching for words hidden among random letters builds visual scanning skills, spelling recognition and vocabulary — all without a single worksheet. Because words can run across, down or diagonally, children also practise the kind of pattern-spotting that supports reading fluency. Easy mode keeps words running only left-to-right and top-to-bottom, so it's a gentle starting point for children just getting confident with letters, while Hard mode's diagonal words give older children a proper challenge.
If your child is new to word searches, start on Easy with the Animals or Colours theme — the words are short and familiar. Sit with them for their first go and point out how the grid is scanned row by row. There's no time pressure to find every word quickly, so it's a lovely calm activity for a rainy afternoon, a car journey (on a phone) or five minutes of quiet time before bed.
